Horse chestnut – from Turkish horses to English conkers

The photo here was taken in spring, when the horse chestnut trees near my house were in full flower. But conker season is coming. The name blends an ancient Greek word for ‘chestnut’ with the Turkish phrase ‘at kestanesi’, literally ‘the horse’s chestnut’, recalling how the nuts were once fed to horses with breathing troubles.
