From Ages to Universe

‘By faith we understand that the ages were framed by the word of God.’ — Hebrews 11:3

The word behind ‘universe’ has travelled a long way. In Greek it began as ‘αἰών’, meaning a lifetime or an age, then came to describe all time itself. In Latin it met ‘universum’ — literally ‘turned into one’ — the idea of everything joined in a single whole. In Hebrews 11:3 the two meet, when faith is said to understand that ‘the ages’ were framed by the word of God. From many ages to one creation, language shows how human thought widened from our own lifespan to the span of all things.

Each word card set begins with an image that captures the theme of the word. The following cards trace its story: a main word card (or two, if extended), a junior version with a paler border, an etymological breakdown showing how the word travelled through time, and a list of sources. Some sets also include cards for related words or translations across other languages. Together they show where each word came from, how it changed, and what it still carries with it.
