I’m beginning a new series exploring the ‘Double Empathy Problem’, a concept that’s central to understanding autistic & non-autistic communication.

As part of my Diploma in Autism and Mental Health, this series is a way to consolidate what I’ve been learning. It’s also shaped by my own experience as a late-diagnosed adult, parent carer, and educator.

It’s made me wonder: is there a kind of double empathy problem even within neurodivergent families? How does being diagnosed later than my children shape our interactions - or my approach to teaching?

Lots to think about.

Next I’ll take a look at the DEP and its application to education.
