Pomegranate Grains

Yesterday, I was working with one of my students on the root ‘gran’, meaning ‘particle, kernel, grain’. It brought us words such as ‘granary’ and ‘grange’, a word I’d come across but not really understood before now. That noun likely brought us the surname ‘Granger’. I was particularly interested in the word ‘pomegranate’ - particularly once I realised that most European languages either move the ‘apple’ element to the end of the word, or omit it altogether.
